Essay by John Szarkowski, written as an introduction to the exhibition of Irving Penn's Cigarettes at the Museum of Modern Art in 1975. Szarkowski was director of MoMA's Department of Photography from 1962 to 1991, then Director Emeritus from 1991 until his death in 2007.

Published in collaboration with The Irving Penn Foundation to accompany the exhibition Irving Penn: Cigarettes held at Hamiltons Gallery (20 June - 17 August 2012).
